PRESENTERS

Patti West Ramseur, Partner, Labor and Employment Leader - Greensboro & Charlotte

Patti Ramseur is a partner and serves as the leader of the firm's labor and employment practice group.  Well-versed in a full range of counseling and litigation for employers, she knows and zealously represents her clients.  Before state and federal courts and administrative agencies, Patti represents employers for claims under Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, the FMLA, the FLSA, the REDA, the Sarbanes Oxley Act, and AIR-21. She also has experience litigating and arbitrating cases involving claims of sexual harassment, intentional/negligent infliction of emotional distress, wrongful discharge, wage and hour disputes, unemployment compensation, contractual disputes, covenants not to compete, and misappropriation of trade secrets. Patti routinely advises clients on compliance with federal and state employment laws and reviews handbooks and policies for compliance with the same. She also advises clients regarding data security issues, processes to protect confidential information, and what companies are required to do in the event of a data breach. In addition, Patti advises hospitals, continuing care retirement communities, and various medical practices in litigated employment and business disputes between health care providers and senior executives. She also represents clients in defense of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims.

Alexander L. Maultsby, Partner, Education Industry Leader - Greensboro & Charlotte

Alex Maultsby is a partner and member of the firm's Labor and Employment Group, providing employment counseling and advising to clients across all of the firm's industry groups.  In addition to state and federal court litigation in North Carolina, and in association with local counsel, Alex has handled cases in South Carolina, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Georgia, Connecticut, and California courts involving a wide range of liability issues.

In his role as a counselor, Alex helps clients make management decisions with company-wide impact, as well as resolve complaints and issues affecting individual employees. He regularly advises clients on, among other things, how to comply with regulations, implement effective internal policies and procedures, address internal and external complaints, manage contentious personnel issues, and minimize litigation risks associated with difficult personnel decisions.  Clients also engage Alex to draft and litigate non-disclosure, non-competition and non-solicitation agreements, as those contractual arrangements become a key business tool for minimizing loss when employees depart.  

In addition, Alex has experience representing clients with unionized workforces, having handled grievances alleging the breach of collective bargaining agreements, arbitrated disputes over union representation, defended and prosecuted charges before the National Labor Relations Board, been involved in strike negotiations and assisted in Union avoidance campaigns.

Alex is active in a number of civic and community activities. He served a two-year term as Chair of the Board of Communities in Schools of Greater Greensboro, worked on the Board of The Barnabas Network, serves on the Board of Goodwill Industries of Central Carolina, and counsels numerous non-profit organizations.  In addition, Alex has served on numerous committees of the North Carolina Bar Association, including as a member of the Labor and Employment Section Council.

Lisa W. Arthur, Senior Associate - Greensboro

Lisa is a member of the firm's litigation practice group. She focuses her practice on defending municipalities in a variety of disputes in  state and federal court, including excessive force claims, negligence actions, constitutional claims, zoning disputes, and breach of contract litigation.  Lisa recently defended a police officer in North Carolina state court against claims of assault, battery, false arrest, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution.

Lisa also handles a variety of business litigation matters, including cases involving breach of contract, breach of noncompetition clauses, Woodson and Pleasant claims, and condemnation actions.

Lisa is also a member of the firm's "Benefit Corporation Team." The "B Team" focuses on exploring and serving the legal needs of aspiring or existing "benefit" or "B Corp" companies –for-profit businesses that seek to better the world through identified social missions and by focusing on sustainability and TPL/3BL (the "triple bottom line" pillars of profits, people, and planet.)

Prior to joining Smith Moore Leatherwood, Lisa earned her law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 2012, where she was the Editor in Chief of the North Carolina Journal of Law and Technology.

Joshua O. Harper, Associate - Greensboro

Josh Harper is an associate in the firm's Litigation Group and his practice focuses on complex commercial, products liability, antitrust, and intellectual property cases in state and federal courts in North Carolina and other jurisdictions. 

Josh earned his law degree, magna cum laude, from Wake Forest University School of Law, where he served as a Notes & Comments Editor of the Wake Forest Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree, with distinction, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Prior to attending law school, Josh served in the United States Army as a military intelligence officer. His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.

Emily I. Bridges, Associate - Greenville

Emily Bridges is a member of the firm's litigation team, where she focuses on antitrust and franchise litigation.

Prior to joining Smith Moore Leatherwood, Emily received a B.A. from Furman University, where she graduated summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Emily earned her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law, magna cum laude, in 2015. While at USC Law, she served as Editor in Chief of the South Carolina Law Review, was a member of the Moot Court Bar, Women in Law and Student Bar Association.

Bridget V. Warren, Associate - Charlotte

Bridget Warren practices in the firm's litigation group. She focuses on commercial litigation in a wide variety of areas, including intellectual property rights, commercial contracts, securities, and employment law.

Bridget is active with the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys and serves on the North Carolina Bar Association's Pro Bono Activities Committee and the Lawyer Effectiveness and Quality of Life Committee. Bridget also spends time volunteering for Lawyer on the Line and Council for Children's Rights. While in law school, Bridget was Treasurer of Holderness Moot Court and a member of the International Appellate Advocacy Team. She was also inducted into the Order of the Barristers.
